Mechanics of Materials

Uniaxial Stress-Strain

stress-strain curve

The slope of the linear portion of the curve equals the modulus of elasticity.

Engineering Strain
     epsilon = deltaL / L0, where
epsilon = engineering strain (units per unit)
deltaL = change in length (units) of member
L0 = original length (units) of member
epsilonpl = plastic deformation (permanent)
epsilonel = elastic deformation (recoverable)

Equilibrium requirements: sumF = 0; sumM = 0

Determine geometric compatibility with the restraints. Use a linear force-deformation relationship:
     F = kdelta

Definitions

Shear Stress-Strain
     gamma = tao/G, where
gamma = shear strain
tao = shear stress
G = shear modulus

     shear modulus, where
E = modulus of elasticity
nu = Poisson's ratio = -(lateral strain)/(longitudinal strain)

Uniaxial Loading and Deformation
     sigma = P/A, where
sigma = stress on the cross section
P = loading
A = cross-sectional area

     epsilon = delta/L, where
delta = longitudinal deformation
L = length of the member
